I have numerous cross references in a document, as in "See Appendix C"
(Appendix C being the cross ref). When I update the TOC - F9 - a FEW of the cross refs in the doc wind up with a page break inserted just before the cross ref. Example - "Blah Blah Blah, See [page break] then on next page Appendix C ... MOST cross refs don't have that happen. Of course I don't want this to happen. Any ideas why/how? Thanks - John D |

The problem is most likely that your have pressed Return while the insertion
point was in the start of an already Ref-bookmarked paragraph - this results in the new paragraph being included in the bookmark. See the demo below Problem 2 at the following address for details and for information about how to prevent the problem: http://www.thedoctools.com/index.php...erence_trouble -- Regards Lene Fredborg DocTools - Denmark www.thedoctools.com Document automation - add-ins, macros and templates for Microsoft Word "John D" wrote: I have numerous cross references in a document, as in "See Appendix C" (Appendix C being the cross ref). Thanks Lene
I still don't really know what the problem was, but "generally" followed the example of the demo you sent me to and the problem appears to have "gone away". In your demo you have us "turn on" the formatting marks - which I did. The mark -------------------------------page break------------------------------- was immediately after the "See" in my example and before the Cross Reference (bookmark). I put the curson immediately before the cross ref/bookmark and pressed "backspace" thereby erasing the page break. When I pressed F9 in the TOC again it "worked" - no page break was inserted - and it worked if I chose "just page numbers" or "update entire table". I've closed the file, reopened several times - seems to be OK. What I don't understand is that I had done exactly that before - I think - that is, put cursor in front of cross ref/bookmark, press backspace to remove page break, save file, F9 - except before it "reinserted" (it seems to me) the page break again. Well - I'm not sure that "all's well that ends well", but it seems to be working and that's the main thing I wanted. (Even though I still don't really know why.) Thanks again John D "Lene Fredborg" wrote: The problem is most likely that your have pressed Return while the insertion point was in the start of an already Ref-bookmarked paragraph - this results in the new paragraph being included in the bookmark. If the problem occurs again, try to go to one of the problem bookmarks via
the Bookmarks dialog box (as illustrated in the demo). You will then see that the page break is included in the selection, indicating that the page break is included in the Ref bookmark. When you delete the page break, the bookmark is changed to contain only the text that should be there. Therefore, the corresponding cross-reference becomes correct when you update fields. The cross-reference reflects whatever is included in the Ref bookmark. In general, you should avoid inserting manual page breaks. If you need a paragraph to start on a new page, apply "Page break before" to the paragraph (Format Paragraph Line and Page Breaks tab). This way the problems you have seen will not occur Manual page breaks may also result in undesired empty pages in documents. -- Regards Lene Fredborg DocTools - Denmark www.thedoctools.com Document automation - add-ins, macros and templates for Microsoft Word "John D" wrote: Thanks Lene I still don't really know what the problem was, but "generally" followed the example of the demo you sent me to and the problem appears to have "gone away".
