As a workaround you can try exporting the data from Excel to .csv format
or Edit-Copy, Edit-Paste to a new Word document and use that as the data source. Otherwise, a. which version of Word/Excel? b. the most likely reason for this error is that the file is not actually an Excel workbook, but has a .xls extension. For example, it might be an HTML table with a file extension of .xls instead of .htm or ..html - particularly if the file has been exported from someone else's system.
