I have added page numbers to a section of a document. Only the first page is
getting the page number, tho. There is no other section break in the
document and there never was. Any ideas? Thank you.

Do you have €œDifferent first page€� turned on in that section? The option can
be turned on and off from the Design tab that is available when you are in
the header or footer. When €œDifferent first page€� is turned on, the first
page will have its own header and footer and you will need to insert the page
number on page 2 of the section as well.

that only takes away the one number i actually have.

if i may add another question here - when i had a page number to a footer
using Current Position, the footer and number show up only on that one page.
is that what Current Position does? I don't think that's the way it's
supposed to work. the footer and number should be on all pages. Again,

Yes, that was what was supposed to happen. Let me try to explain a little
mo
Headers and footers belong to sections. A document with no section breaks
consists of one section. However, each section can have up to _three_
different headers and footers, one set for the first page, one set for the
even pages and one set for odd pages. You have a page number on page 1 but
not on page 2 ff. This is because you have €œDifferent first page turned on€�
and the page number resides in the €œFirst page footer€�. When you turn off
€œDifferent First Page€�, your first page will use the €œgeneral€� footer which
is currently empty. You have to insert the page number in the footer that is
now the €œgeneral€� footer for all pages in the section.

Try this:
Go to the footer. Note the blue label to the left. The label tells you which
of the three footers of the section you are in:

- €œFirst page footer€� means that you are on page 1 of a section with
€œDifferent First Page€� turned on.

- €œFooter€� means that you are in the €œgeneral€� footer of the section. It
will be used on all pages if neither €œDifferent first page€� nor €œDifferent
Odd & Even Pages€� are turned on.

- €œEven page footer€� will be used on all even pages if €œDifferent Odd & Even
Pages€� is turned on. €œFooter€� will be used on all odd pages in that situation
(and still, page 1 may use its own footer).

The same principles apply to the headers. Think of the different types of
headers and footers as separate €œareas€� of a document that can contain
different content. You need to define which content to go where.

About €œCurrent Position€�: The command inserts a page number precisely where
your insertions mark is positioned. If you insert the page number in the main
body of the document (not header or footer), it will appear in only that
location. If you insert it in the footer, it will appear according to the
rules described above. For example, if you insert it in the €œFirst page
footer€� of the document, it will appear on only the first page (I think that
is what you did).
