Default Line # at the bottom of the document is grayed out

I just installed Word 2003 and even when I am in print view, the line number
at the bottom of the page is grayed out. It might intermittently show up,
but normally it is grayed out. How can I fix this.

Thanks,
Shona

Hi ?B?c3J3?=,

Can you be more precise about what you mean by "line number"?

By default, a Word "page" (the white area where you type) doesn't have anything
on it, except for the single starting paragraph. (You won't even see that if
the display of non-printing characters is turned off.)

And "line numbers" (File/Page Setup/Layout) are a special thing that I wouldn't
usually associate with "the line number at the bottom of the page". (They
appear down the side of the document, next to the next.)

So I'm having trouble figuring out what you mean...

The OP is referring to the line number on the status bar: this is Ln 1 in a
new blank document.
