These vertical stripes (one pixel wide, spaced probably 20 pixels apart)
appear only in the page view of Word. Normal, Outline, and Web view don't
show them, and they don't print on paper. This "feature" appeared after I
loaded a document authored by someone else, and now seems to be stuck. I'm
using Office 2000 (Version 9.0.3821 SR-1).

Just a thought! Could they be "Grid Lines"? Go to Table, click on Hide Grid
Lines. Do you still see the lines?

If they only appear in Print Layout view then it sounds like the
Drawing Grid has been turned on.

- Go to View/Toolbars/Drawing to turn on your Drawing toolbar
- Click the Draw menu on the toolbar and select Grid
- Turn off "Display gridlines on screen"

btw, if they suddenly appeared after opening a document from another
user then were you prompted to enable/disable macros? More than likely
the document or attached template contains a macro that turns the
Drawing Grid on. If you weren't prompted then check your macro
security under Tools/Macro/Macros. If it is set to low then set it to
Medium. That way you'll be prompted if the document you are opening
contains macros and even if you allow them to run at least you'll have
an idea of what happened when you encounter changes to your
preferences in the future.

In Word, if the Drawing toolbar is not already displayed, display it by
clicking on View | Toolbars | Drawing. On the Drawing toolbar, click on
Draw | Grid | uncheck the "Display gridlines on screen" box | OK.
