I'm trying to finish a dissertation with many footnotes. Every time I look at
the footnotes, the formatting (italics for book names), has disappeared from
random footnotes. I have had to reformat the same footnote time and again.
How can I make this stop?

On another issue, often when I try to format a few words (e.g. bold, or
italic) by selecting the desired words, then clicking, my whole document goes
italic or bold. I can undo this by clicking on "undo", but that's is an extra
step. How can I get it to just format what I select?

I'm running Word 2002 SP3 on XP Media Center edition 2005.
