[Still digging]

Have Office 07 trying to create a normal document but it won't let me type
beyond first page, even headers and footers are overwritten by body text.

Exit Word. Search for the normal.dotm file (be sure to search hidden files
and folders) and rename it. Then restart Word, which will create a fresh
copy of normal.dotm file with factory default settings.

It's impossible to tell how the Normal template was damaged. One possiblity
is file corruption.
