Default Extension: RTF or DOC

I was asked to begin using RTF. What problems can I anticiapte if I begin to
use RTF as the default extension instead of DOC?

The main difference you will notice is the file size is often larger as RTF
than DOC.

Note that it is more than simply a question of file extension. RTF and DOC
are different file formats.

I have used RTF as the default extension consistently for nearly two
decades, initially for security and portability reasons but also
because the format was more economical of space than DOC.

As a result of recent changes in Word (I suppose) RTF files are no
longer more compact than their DOC versions. Furthermore (and this has
always been true) if a file contains graphical information, it will be
enormous when saved as RTF.

I still prefer RTF however. Partly out of habit and partly because
macro-nasties can't be transmitted by them.
