Default the backspace key

Hello and thank you to whomever is kind enough to assist me.
I feel like something is wrong with my backspace key. In the past, when I
would highlight text and then hit the backspace key, the highlighted text
would be erased. Now, however, this is not the case. Instead, the text
remains and the cursor simply moves to the point at the beginning of the
highlighted area. Similarly, when I highlight text and then type in new
text, meaning to replace the highlighted area, the new text is simply
inserted from the position at the beginning of my highlight with out deleting
the highlighted material.
These problems are seriously cramping my style people. Also, I have
re-installed Word to no effect...perhaps the settings were saved.
Thank you! Honestly, there are so many questions on this page that I will
be surprised and delighted if I get a response at all.

In the "Search for" section of this newgroups section type "backspace key"
and press "go". You will get a number of the same answer -"On the General Tab
of ToolsOptions, check the box for "Typing replaces selection"".
