Default page numbers in Word 2007

I don't seem to have the ability to add page numbers. The options are grayed
out in any of the relevant menus in footers.

If you are editing a Footer, you will have a contextual Header and Footer
Tab (selected by default) on the Ribbon. Third button from the left is the
Page Number Building Block Gallery labelled, oddly enough, Page Number. I
know of nothing which can cause this to be greyed out - are you sure you are
looking in the right palce - what do you mean by relevant menus?

The page number button is active. When I select this, there are six
selections, including "top of page", "bottom of page", "page margin",
"current position", "format page numbers" and "remove page numbers". I
assume that I would select one of the first four to insert a page number?
Each of these first four choices has only one selection, which is grayed out:
"Save Selection As Page Number".

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but sometimes when selecting the
"headers" button, the following message appears: "cannot open doc template:
c:\..\1033\BuildingBlocks.dotx.

It is indeed relevant. If you have an error opening the Building Blocks
Template then you will have no Page Numbers available for insertion.

The template may be corrupt for some reason. If you delete it, Word should
recreate it - what it actually does is copy it from its installation folder.
If the problem remains then Word's 'master copy' may be corrupt. In this
instance I don't know if there's a proper procedure to follow - running
Diagnostics might recreate the master if you delete it - failing that you
can extract it from the CAB file on the CD but come back for better
instruction if you need it.

I did a search and also checked specifically the path:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\1033 and couldn't find the file.
I would appreciate receiving information on getting access to the "master
copy". Thanks again.
