I am trying to number my document but it either gives me page 1 on the first
page but then it does not show numbers on the rest of the pages. When I start at page 2, it lets me start with a number 2 but then it jumps to 3, then back to 2, 3, 4, etc to the last page. This is a 22 page document but it keeps stating I have 23 pages. At the top of each page, it states Header - Section 1- , on various pages it says Header - Section 2 - even if its' not on page 2. I notice it says Footer - Section 1- or whatever page it is, then on the right side it says Same as previous, does this have anything to do with what I am doing? I notice page 3 says Footer - Section 2. I have various section/page breaks as well. All my pages are correct when I have the show/hide paragraph marks. I hope I am explaining this clearly. |

When you have more than one section, the pagination can run separately in
each section. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm -- Suzanne S. The best way to untangle confusing page numbering such as you describe in a
multi-section document is to take out all the section breaks FIRST, then put them back in, one-at-a-time, from the top of the document to the bottom. Then, starting at the top of your document, go to the header or footer (wherever you're inserting page numbers) in Section 1, format the page numbering for that section (Header & Footer Tools/Design tab/Header & Footer group/Page Number/Format Page Numbers...), then insert the page number field where you want it. Then go to the next section. Before doing anything to the page numbers in this next section, click on the lit "Link to Previous" button in the Ribbon (Header & Footer Tools/Design tab/Navigation group). If you don't, you'll be changing the page numbers in the previous section that you just set up! Once the "Link to Previous" button is turned off, format page numbers for this section, then insert the page number field where you want it. Then go to the next section, turn off the "Link to Previous" button, then format the page numbers for this section, then insert the page number field. And so on. If you always remember to turn off the "Link to Previous" button before making any changes to your headers and footers, you'll never have the problem you described in your post. Note, however, that you can restart page numbering or change the number
format without unlinking the header/footer. It's only when you want to put the page number in a different place, or omit it altogether, or have other text in the header/footer that differs from the previous one (other than that which can be provided by a StyleRef field) that you need to unlink them. -- Suzanne S. Thanks, Suzanne, I didn't know that (but I just tried it and it works!). We
always tell our people to turn off the "Same as Previous" before making ANY changes to the page number in the footer, and that's just the way I learned it. Y'learn something new everyday, don't-cha? Yeah, I learned that by accident as well, and I often wish I hadn't because
it resulted in my deleting the unlinking information from my article at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting...rontMatter.htm (though it's still spelled out, I think, in http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm). The problem is that this works fine for changing from roman to arabic numerals and restarting numbering, but it doesn't apply to leaving the header/footer blank in some sections, which is what people seem to have the most trouble with. -- Suzanne S.
