Default very very slow when trying to open the folder list in word

Hi,
I have Word 2003 and I am sure I have had this problem before many moons
ago.
When I open Word that is fine. Then I click on the 'open' folder (or File
Open). The Open box appears with the drop down list next to 'Look in:'. If I
click on this drop down list which is defaulted at 'My Document' to find
another folder it seems to seize up for about a minute and then works again.
Please tell me why this might be and what can I do to cure it. It only seems
to do this in Word. I have also deleted all the normal.dot files and done a
Help detect and repair. But nothing changes.
