I've had Office 2007 for months now without problems, but just recently have
not been able to open Zip folders from a government web site. When I try to open the Zip folder it won't open and displays the message "The Office Open XML file [X] cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents" . When I click on "Details" it state that Microsoft Office cannot open the file because some parts are missing or invalid or corrupt. But these are files I opened fine previously, and I am now getting this message for every zip file I try to open from this web site (www.cms.hhs.gov). I have Windows Vista. Any suggestions to solve this would be much appreciated. |

Can you give a specific link that contains a file you cannot open?
I take it you are not trying to open the ZIP file directly in Word? You would have to extract the files from the ZIP first. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org DSacks wrote: I've had Office 2007 for months now without problems, but just recently have not been able to open Zip folders from a government web site. Yes, here's a link
http://www.cms.hhs.gov/PrescriptionDrugCovContra/ and it would be to the third document listed under "Downloads" (the one with the Zip icon next to it). There are many similar examples -- any time I click on a document with a zip icon next to it now, the same problem arises. Previously, when I clicked on the document it did automatically extract the files. But now it doesn't, whether I click on "open" or "save" first (when the Windows box pops up asking if I want to open or save the file). Is there some other way I could perhaps extract the files from the Zip first (other than by clicking on the document)? Thanks for any help you can provide. It sounds like you have zip files set to open with Word. Right click on one
and select Open With and, if you have a further choice, select Choose Default. Then pick your zip program and check the box to always use it for the type of file. -- Enjoy, Tony "DSacks" wrote in message ... Tony,
Thanks for the suggestion. I think that is what's happening (since the Word icon shows in the pop up window), but when I right-click on the document I don't get the "Open with" option. The only options are "open", "open in new tab" and "open in new window". Any thoughts on how to get to an "Open With" option? Hi D.,
Hold down the shift key while right clicking to see if you then get the 'Open With' choice while you are in Windows Explorer. ======= "DSacks" wrote in message ... Tony, Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work either. Although you do state "while
you are in Windows Explorer", and I'm actually in Internet Explorer (since the zip document is on a web site). So not sure if that makes a difference. I did go to my Control Panel to check the default programs set for my computer, and it shows Word for files with the extension "zip". The only other option it gave me to change it to was Internet Explorer, but when I changed it to that and then tried to open the document, the computer just went crazy and started opening up Internet Explorer windows non-stop so that I had to turn the computer off. So I changed the default back to Word for zip extensions, since that was the only other option. Thanks for the suggestion though. As well as the options provided (in Windows Explorer, not IE), there should
be a Browse or Search button for you to select any program you wish. If you have Winzip (I don't have it installed on this computer) there may also be a way within that to re-associate zip files but I don't know what it might be. If you just want to use Windows try selecting "explorer.exe" in your Windows folder as the program. -- Enjoy, Tony "DSacks" wrote in message ... Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work either.
