how can i get my backspace key back to its default setting?

when i highlight a word or phrase, and then press backspace, the cursor
jumps back to before the phrase and doesn't delete it


I'm using Vista

Tools | Options | Edit: Typing replaces selection. If your reference to
Vista means that you're using Word 2007, Office Button | Word Options |
Advanced | Editing options: Typing replaces selected text.
